Australia’s super market is booming, with the number of yoga studios and stores doubling in the past year.
The boom is the result of the growing number of people seeking out the “super market” of yoga, which includes studios and online shops, according to figures released this week by the Australian Business Review.
The report, released by the Centre for Australian Studies, said the number was likely to have reached 50,000 in 2018.
Its co-author, Dr Michael Molloy, said this was “the largest growth of any industry in Australia for decades”.
“It is really just the tip of the iceberg,” he said.
“There are so many other things going on, including things like online services, retail, hotels and more.”
According to the ABS, there were more than 1,000 yoga shops in Australia in December 2018, up from less than 200 in January 2017.
A spokeswoman for the Australian Yoga Alliance, which represents more than 100 yoga studios, said they had not seen any growth in sales over the past two years.
She said the group was disappointed the ABS had not included the number as part of its annual survey.
There are more than 200 yoga studios in Australia, with most of them operating in Melbourne and Brisbane.
